Thanks for Making Great Things Happen!

The Mountain is undergoing an exciting renewal process, thanks to your support! And with your continued participation in our programs, annual membership and donations, and volunteer support, we can achieve our vision to be…

An exemplary retreat, camp & learning center that celebrates Unitarian Universalist principles, inspires people of all ages, transforms lives,
and builds a more compassionate world.

By clicking these links, you can see the great many facilities, program, and guest services improvements have been made over the past 2 years thanks to increased MountainCamp and retreat participation and the extraordinary generosity of our donors. With your help, we can keep our funding strong and progress steady as we move forward.

For 2018, we have ambitious, but achievable programmatic goals and Annual Funding goal of $260,000. These goals are guided by the 2017 Strategic Plan and a detailed Development Plan to guide our staff and volunteer efforts. You can read about our various fundraising goals and activities in this issue of Mountain Matters and on The Mountain’s Facebook page.

Here is what you can expect to hear from us in the coming weeks about how you can be involved in helping The Mountain to be fully funding:

  • Join or Renew your Annual Membership–this is an affordable way for people of all ages to support The Mountain, founded as a membership organization 40 years ago. There are membership categories for all ages, with the newer option of Household Membership for two or  more people. Annual members ages 16 years and older are granted the right to vote in matters of Mountain business. Generally our Annual Membership Drive happens in the early spring prior to our Annual Meeting, but you can join as a member at any point during the year.

  • Make a gift to the Annual Fund between now and December 31st–our Annual Appeal will be shifting from Spring to Fall this year, with appeal mailings and communications going out in late August. But, you don’t have to wait for the gift return envelopes to arrive! You can give online using our newly designed and easier to use DONATE button via PayPal, or via stock transfer anytime.

  • Donate to our Mountain Campership Fund, which has provided $20,000 in financial support to over 40 campers who might not otherwise be able to experience MountainCamp.

  • Participate in our MountainCamp Drawing and win a week of MountainCamp 2019 for a child or youth in your family or community. Tickets are available for a $60 donation, with our first drawing on October 15th–The Mountain’s 40th Birthday!

  • Support our 2nd Annual Silent Auction, which will launch in September for some items and culminate during Thanksgiving Weekend 2018. We are seeking a combination of donated Vacation Property Rentals and Getaway Stays, as well as themed gift baskets. This event raised over $3,000 for The Mountain last November and with your donations of items and bidding, we can raise even more in 2018!

  • Special Project Funding & Major Gifts are a vital source of support for those larger projects that come up suddenly or those we aspire to accomplish, but are above and beyond our annual funding capability. Each year we rely on the extraordinary generosity of those who have the ability to donate larger “stretch” gifts to accomplish these special projects. Contact our Executive Director or Development Director for more information.

  • Planned Giving to The Mountain and the Mountain Endowment Fund is another significant way you can be a part of The Mountain’s Legacy and future for generations to come. As part of your estate planning, you can include either or both organizations. This can be done through your financial advisor, or through the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Umbrella Giving Program.

  • Pledge to the Wake Now Our Vision campaign’s Legacy Challenge between now and June 2019, which can provide The Mountain or Mountain Endowment Fund with 10% matching funds for qualifying legacy (planned) gifts made through the UUA Umbrella Giving Program.

  • Support The Mountain’s Many Hands Peace Farm and commitment to environmental sustainability by participating in the Celebration Forest project. With every $30 donation we receive for this purpose, you receive a copy of the book Little Nut by Lori Short Staubitz, a UU minister and founder of the Celebration Forest. The donated money will be used to plant fruit and nut trees in our Food Forest at the base.

  • Consider Memorial Life Membership for yourself and/or a loved one. The Mountain’s Memorial Garden is a serene, natural setting where ashes of loved ones may be scattered. The names of those honored are displayed on our Memorial Life Members plaque located in The Mountain’s Heritage Hallway. Individual Memorial Life Member gifts of $1,500 are recognized by featuring the honoree’s name on engraved plaques in the Memorial Garden and Heritage Hallway.

If you have an interest in making a gift to The Mountain, or would like more information about any of these opportunities for giving, contact our Development Director, Laurel Amabile, (828) 526-5838 ext. 254.
