2019 Braving Space – Congregational Leadership Retreat with UUA Staff

September 6 - September 8

Braving Space – Workshop for Unitarian Universalists

How do we identify our deepest values?  How do we recognize the things in us that get in the way to living out those values?  How do we amplify our deepest values in the world? How do we know what the value is that we need to focus in on to make ourselves and the world a better place?  Are we afraid?

From Connie Goodbread, Co-Lead, Southern Region Congregational Life Staff:

“Years ago I came to the Mountain for a workshop led by Professor Til Evans.  It was the first time that someone challenged me to practice vulnerable leadership.  I was changed by this experience.  Over and over again people tell us that they want to be safe.  What is safe for one person might not be safe for another.  Instead of striving for safety –  lets create space where we can be brave together.  Space where we can bring our whole selves – be genuine and vulnerable.  Space where are deepest values can be identified and named.  Space where we can explore the things in our lives that get in the way of amplifying those values.

I long to be in a space where we can talk about deep things.  Where we can disagree and still love each other.  I long to be in a space where we are not playing politics nor afraid to be ourselves.  Come and join Kathy McGowan and I and help us create the space where we can go deep together, where no topic is taboo and discomfort will be leaned into and push through.”

This workshop is for people who want to have a deep discussion about Unitarian Universalism. Ministers during their formation have the opportunity to practice theological reflection.  Lay leaders do not get that opportunity.

Our efforts for this experience will be to create brave space where people can bring their whole selves and explore their deepest values.  We will explore what their values demand of them – how are they called.  We will identify road blocks that get in the way of their calling.  We will connect how their calling fits into the calling of Unitarian Universalism.  We will connect and amplify the team, community and support that people get when they move from the me to the we.  How the community has value that transcends the individual.  How as individuals we are so much stronger in beloved community.

Participants will help to create the way we move through this experience.  We will talk in the beginning about our expectations and assumptions and from those shared answers we will develop the plan, together, for creating brave space so that we can explore these deep concepts.

Come to be whole and held in the arms of community as we talk of our deepest values, our fears, our spiritually deepening and our evolving.  Come let’s be amplifiers of all that we hold most dear.
