There are many venues vying to host your next event, but why not hold your next event on top of a mountain far away from the noise and light pollution of the lowlands? Really? Why not?
The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center is perched on a 4,200 foot high granite cliff on the Eastern Continental Divide in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains located in southwest NC four miles from the resort town of Highlands. We are a year-round retreat and learning center serving businesses, non-profits, schools, churches and other groups.
The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center, Inc. founded in 1979 is based on the Unitarian Universalist faith tradition and principles, grounded in the teachings of the world’s great religions, with an unbounded spirituality, drawing from scripture and science, nature and philosophy, personal experience and ancient traditions.
Our doors are open to anyone regardless of religious background, gender, ethnicity, age, ability, sexual orientation or gender expression. We want to offer a little bit of the heaven of our mountaintop to any who desire the experience.

Yes, we know that you need more than just inspirational vistas to make your event successful!
We have more than a dozen indoor and outdoor meeting spaces. We would be happy to discuss with you the best meeting spaces for your event. The Great Room in the Mountain Lodge, for example, can seat as many as 60 people and has full-length windows offering unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. In the evening or a wintery day, enjoy a roaring fire in our hand-crafted 20-foot high stone chimney and fireplace. The Great Room is in the same building immediately adjacent to The Lodge sleeping accommodations.
“The Deck”, directly accessible to the Great Room, can be used, weather permitting, for small meetings or break out sessions. It is a frequent social time gathering location not to mention a regular star-gazing venue.
Our outdoor meeting facilities include our large amphitheater and fire pit and our contemplative Mediation Rock, as well as an open grassy field near the Craft Barn at the base of The Mountain.

We have seven configurations of lodging facilities designed to accommodate individuals, families and small to large-sized groups. Our collective capacity can accommodate 80 – 100 adults.
A central building at The Mountain is The Lodge with 12 separate bedrooms, each with private bath, that can accommodate as many as 26 individuals. The Lodge and the Great Room are in the same building, providing connected lodging and meeting facilities. It’s an excellent event environment and an inviting location for socializing.
We also have cabin facilities with various configurations. Cabin configurations enable us to provide casual lodging for families/large groups or individuals. Our individual cabins sleep two and have private baths and showers. Single occupancy may also be available with a small up-charge on our base lodging rate.
Our bunkhouses, typically used for MountainCamp and Cons, are a favorite among school aged groups. Each cabin can sleep 8 youth with a private room for 2 chaperons.
Emerson is a fully contained cabin with kitchen, meeting space and two bedrooms, is ideal for small groups or leadership teams leading large groups.

Our dining facility has the capacity to provide three meals a day for even the largest groups attending a Mountain event. All meals are served buffet style. Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are available throughout the day.
We are keen to provide healthy meals that are carefully prepared to nourish both body and spirit. Our kitchen offers menus and food preparation to satisfy the appetites of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dietary needs. Just let us know your dietary needs as our Guest Services staff help you plan your retreat.
Acting on our commitment to sustainability, we use seasonal, farm-fresh produce from our Many Hands Peace Farm or regionally grown foods, when available.

Our Guest Services team is always at the ready to support your event needs. We are here to help register attendees, greet them upon arrival, and plan ahead to attend to their needs while on The Mountain.
If you left something at home, our Mountain Store, located in the Registration Office, has a collection of items that could make your stay more pleasant. We also have a collection of mugs, photos, t-shirts and other keepsakes of your Mountain visit.

In October 2015, we completed a capital investment to upgrade our wireless Internet service.
As The Mountain becomes more internet enabled, our hope is that you will continue to value the back to nature experience of The Mountain. We hope you embrace a short respite from the ubiquitous, all-coverage, all-the-time connection to the grid and plug in, instead, to some peace, solitude and beauty of the world around us.
